Abstract: This article provides a comprehensive survey of the basic research model, technology development, and main issues for improving matching-area suitability, which is one of the key issues of scene matching aided navigation. First, the main concepts, evaluating criteria and key sub-technologies are analyzed. Based on the summary of each sub-technology and their correlations, a general research frame is proposed. Differences of study methods between researchers in China and abroad are pointed out, and subsequently some related techniques in the field of target tracking are introduced into the research frame of matching-area suitability. Finally, for multi-source image matching, the restrictions between matching-area suitability and sensor characteristics, image registration algorithms, and application constraints are summarized. The survey is expected to help enlarge the scope of technologies and methods for matching-area suitability.
