Abstract: To achieve the deterministic delay and high bandwidth of an avionics network, an architecture of avionics full duplex switched ethernet (AFDX) over wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) is established, which enables the delay determination of the AFDX to be compatible with the bandwidth flexibility of the WDM and satisfies the demand of avionics interconnection networks for real-time constraint and high-bandwidth performance. Based on the analysis of the periodical frames adopted for real-time communication, a speedup scheme named wavelength aggregation is proposed, which reassigns and shapes the coming frames to realize the efficient use of the bandwidth of every optical wavelength and reduces the wavelength count for switching. On the premise of guaranteed performance (100% throughput with bounded delay), a switching mechanism using the wavelength aggregation scheme is mathematically derived. Finally, taking the delay rate and speedup factor as the main indices, the merit and adaptability of the speedup scheme are verified by computer simulation results.
