Abstract: In order to reduce or eliminate the consequences of the failure of the main system of some mechanical equipment, a standby system is often used to replace the failed main system and complete its function. Because of the characteristic of delay of failure of some standby mechanical systems, a functional check policy of variant intervals is proposed and the availability mathematical model and cost rate mathematical model of the standby system are provided in accordance with the check policy. An optimal maintenance model is constructed to calculate the variant check intervals under the policy, which aims to minimize maintenance cost rate, and is subject to system availability. Furthermore, the algorithm of the optimal maintenance model is also provided, through which the values of variant intervals can be obtained . Finally, an example is given for case study, and the result proves that the cost of the variant intervals model decreases by 9.55% as compared with that of the equal interval model when the initial check interval is 3 times the interval for repetitive inspection.
