Abstract: A main characteristic parameter model(MCPM)is presented in the paper. The principle of MCPM is as follows. The optimum solutions of thermodynamic relationships describing engine component matching operation are obtained by optimization method for every possible fault combination and the reasonable optimum solutions are selected according to applicable and reasonable criteria. The MCPM can be used to diagnose primary engine faults with the number of possible fault parameters more than that of measurable parameters. As compared with the well known influenc coefficient matrix method, the MCPM requires less number of measurable parameters, can provide more information for engine fault diagnosis and posses more comprehensive practical significance. Three methematical models for MCPM are given and the technique of using MCPM for engine fault diagnosis is discussed in the paper. The applicability and reliability of MCPM are also analyzed by computer simulation in the paper. Research results show that the CPM presented is an effective method for engine condition monitoring and fault diagnosis.
