Abstract: The variable frequency Alternating current (AC) generator is developed on the three-grade constant frequency AC synchronous generator and the wide range of work speed brings new features to the variable frequency generator system. Furthermore, the variable frequency AC starter/generator system is developed on the variable frequency AC generator and it is more complex in terms of its working condition and working characteristics. This paper first introduces the structure characteristics of the variable frequency generator, and then the key points of the design and the impact of variable frequency on the generation system are presented. After that, the start working mode of the variable frequency AC starter/generator is studied and the two exciter operation modes are investigated. The results show that the transformer operation mode is suggested. At last, through analyzing the current variable frequency AC start generator and its generation system, this paper points out that it is possible to further improve its power density and efficiency, and the work will promote its application to the large civil aircraft in our country.
