Abstract: Fiber Reinforced Plastics/Polymers (FRPs) are widely used in the aeronautic and astronautic industry due to their excellent mechanical, thermo-physical, electromagnetic and chemical properties. As a class of multiphase-mixed hard-to-machining materials with anisotropy and inhomogeneity, their machining problems related to machining precision, processing defects, productivity, etc. have promoted the development of laser processing of the materials. Progresses in the fundamental research on laser processing of FRPs by experimental and theoretical approaches are reviewed, with special attention paid to the research hotspots and development trends. The existing problems and challenges in current research on ultrafast laser processing of FRPs are discussed. Progresses in research and applications of FRPs, such as laser cutting and drilling, laser milling, laser surface treatment and connecting, and laser-assisted forming, are reported. For manufacturing of astronautic products (especially the spacecraft) from FRPs, the potential applications related to laser macro processing and laser micro manufacturing technologies are proposed. The equipment needed to realize the applications are also discussed.

Key words: fiber composite material, laser processing, ultrafast laser, aerospace, macro processing, micro manufacturing
