Abstract: The requirements of navigation function in flight management system (FMS) are studied, and navigation modes, system structure, filtering methods, and FMS automatic navigation management are analysed. In the first part of this paper, the navigation precision requirements are summerized according to ARINC specifications and FAA study on FMS. Then several filtering problems about classical filtering techniques, Kalman filter and its reduction and the new developed information integration techniques (IIT) are analyzed. The advantages of IIT over other methods are presented and its promising characteristics are analysed, showing that the IIT is the most suitable method for FMS navigation system design. After all, the paper studies the navigation management strategy on considering both current and future developments. Several results are given finally as a suggestion on the design of navigation funetion in advanced FMS.
