Abstract: ased on nonlinear vibration theory of a rotor system with noulinear spring character-istics excited by an unbalanced forcc,a control teehnique for suppressing vibrational response of a rotor system passing through critical speeds by controllable nonlinear spring characteristics is developed. In the technique, the supporting stiffnesscs have a softer characteristic when a rotor is accele rated and have a harder one when the rotor is decelerated. In an experiment,a set of controllable nonlinear spring characteristics is built up to verity the effect of the technique in re-ucing vibrational level when a rotor passes through critical speeds.
