Abstract:

As a novel riveting process, electromagnetic riveting (EMR) can make a rivet form the swage head in the forming cup in one shoot. In order to study the influence of die configuration on the riveting quality of EMR, this paper analyzes the riveting quality of swage heads, interference-fit and residual compressive stress with different angles of riveting die through numerical simulation and experiment. A fatigue test is designed for experimental verification and analysis on the riveting specimens using different angles of riveting die. The results show that the variety of angles has a great influence on interference-fit: a smaller angle can obtain a greater amount of interference-fit. A 66° riveting die angle is recommended for use to achieve an appropriate interference and the longest fatigue life of joints.

Key words: angles of riveting die, electromagnetic riveting, numerical simulation, interference-fit, fatigue life
