Abstract: The microstructure and mechanical properties were studied for hot-isostatic-pressing (HIP) and aged ZrO2-5 mol% Y2O3 alloy by means of TEM and XRD. It was shown that comparing with the as-received state (HIP, not aged), the "tweed" structure obtained in early stage of aging (1100℃) generated a combination of high strength and high fracture toughness (bending strength increased from 565MPa to 990MPa). However, when it transforms into "colony" structure in later stage of aging (1400℃), the strength decreases to a value much. lower than that of the as-received alloy as a result of t-ZrO2 precipitation and the increase of Y2O3 content in the matrix.
