Abstract: The feasibility of Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) for Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer resin matrix composites (CFRPs) has been verified. However, since EDM is a thermal process, there is a heat affected zone on the surface of EDMed workpieces, which deteriorates the surface quality of the machined CFRPs. In this paper, the inhibition methods of the heat affected zone of CFRPs machined by EDM using transistor pulse power supply are studied. In the case of the same discharge energy of a single pulse, heat affected zone under different energy applying modes were compared by simulation and experiment. The results indicate that under the same single discharge energy, higher discharge power is beneficial to reducing the heat affected zone and increasing the material removal rate. The results also show that the heat affected zone under positive polarity is smaller than that under negative polarity.
