Abstract:

The tool offsetting status in the milling was analysed, and a new algorithm for cutter locations generation was presented. Tracing method was used to calculate the intersection curve between two surfaces in the algorithm, initial cutter locations can be derived from the points on the intersection curve, and Newton iteration can be used to accurately determine the cutter location finally. The advantage of the algorithm is that the machining error can be controlled accurately, and not only ball end cutter, but also flat end cutter can be processed by the algorithm.

Key words: CAM, multi-axis NC maching, surface intersection, interference avoidance
