THE CALCULATION OF EFFECTIVE ELECTROMAGNETIC PARAMETERS OF HONEYCOMB RADAR ABSORBING STRUCTURAL MATERIALS

Abstract:

Honeycomb structural material is one of the valuable radar absorbing material? for the application of stealth technology. The calculation of effective electromagnetic parameters of lossy medium-filled honeycomb structure is essential to the electrical matching design of honeycomb structural materials. In this paper, the honeycomb structure is supposed to be the axi-symmetric dielectric rod arrays. The characteristic equation of lossy medium-filled honeycomb structure is derived with the dielectric waveguide theory and the consideration of coupling effects of the honeycomb arrays. The propagation properties and the propagation modes of electromagnetic wave in honeycomb arrays numerically ars analysed to find out the effective permittivity and the effective permeability of the lossy medium-filled honeycomb structure. The results indicate that the dominant mode propagation constant of the honeycomb structure takes the value between the propagation constant of plane wave of pure material of core and that of shell. The effective electromagnetic parameters of honeycomb structure present the dispersive effect, its effective permeability is larger and its effective permittivity is smaller, as expected for electrical matching design. With the lossy medium-filled honeycomb structural materials, the high performance proper ties of structural materials could be obtained through designing.
