Abstract:

This article introduces a new technology for drilling (expanding) hole on PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) used in airplane canopy. The process is finished with one stroke, without using compressed air or other coolant. The surface quality of the hole by this method is better than that by the method currently used without cracks and broken edges , The machining stress induced by drilling (expanding) is reduced by 8096,σmr<1.0MPaThe resistance to solvent crazing in the solution of isopropyl alcohol (30CCCC)is increased by more than 20 times. The technology is suitable for making hole on the stretched and non-stretched PMMA, and the components bonded with polyester reinforced plastics. The drilled (expanded) hole is not subjeted to annealing for releasing the residual stress.
