Abstract: Digital twin technology creates virtual models of objects in a digital manner, simulates the behavior of objects in reality based on data, and achieves the goal of shortening product development cycles and reducing costs through methods such as virtual and real feedback, data fusion analysis, and decision iteration optimization. To address the issues of low production efficiency and machining quality in mechanical process systems, the concept of digital twins is introduced into the design process of mechanical process systems. This article summarizes the concept and research progress of digital twins in mechanical process systems based on their current development status and characteristics. The key technologies of the mechanical process system driven by digital twins were sorted out from two aspects: technical route and core technology. The specific application of digital twins in mechanical process systems in the entire product lifecycle stage was explored from three stages: product design stage, product manufacturing stage, and product service stage. The opportunities and challenges faced by mechanical process systems driven by digital twins were discussed from the perspective of introducing emerging technologies. Finally, the future prospects and trends of mechanical process systems driven by digital twins are prospected from three aspects: systematization, intelligence, and standardization, providing reference for the further research and application of digital twins in mechanical process systems.
