Abstract:

Accurate and reliable timing is an important component of critical infrastructures. With the development and widespread application of satellite navigation systems, an increasing number of key infrastructures are using GNSS as the main source to access time. The US Department of Homeland Security issued that among the 16 key industries, 11 industries such as communication, mobile phones, electricity, and finance rely on precise timing and time synchronization. Based on a comprehensive study of a large number of literature, this article analyzes the current application status of GNSS timing and time synchronization in important infrastructures such as finance, power, 5G and aeronautics & astronautics. Firstly, the meanings of commonly used time and frequency parameters in various key infrastructures are summarized, and the quantitative requirements for time and time synchronization performance are sorted out based on different application scenarios and relevant standards of key infrastructures. Secondly, the application ways of GNSS timing and time synchronization in different key infrastructures are analyzed, and a typical architecture of a distributed time synchronization network based on GNSS is obtained. Then, two types of GNSS timing and time synchronization terminals widely used in various key infrastructures are introduced. Finally, the future development trends of timing and time synchronization technologies are discussed. As an important infrastructure of a country, satellite navigation systems play a crucial role in providing GNSS timing and time synchronization services to support the operation of various infrastructures. Considering the inherent fragility of satellite navigation systems and the dependence of various infrastructures on GNSS, it is bound to be an important threat to national security. Therefore, it is not only necessary to improve the safety and reliability of GNSS, but also to develop the timing and synchronization technology that does not rely on GNSS in the construction of the next generation navigation positioning and timing system.
