Abstract: A periodic changing and moving heat source model is designed. Moreover, a new theoretical formula for calculating the intermittent grinding temperature field is obtained by use of the faltung integral concept. The recommended formula is of general significance. It is suitable for both intermittent and conventional continuous grinding. It is noteworthy that by use of this new formula not only the final temperature distribution of the workpiece surface layer but also the whole time-course of the temperature distribution during grinding can be found. With the new formula the temperature distribution characteristic of workpiece surface during intermittent grinding, the effect of the intermittent ratio and period on temperature distribution and the reducing temperature effect of a segmental or slotted wheel are investigated in depth. Finally, through the experiment it is confirmed that the new formula accords with the practice of intermittent grinding.
