Abstract:

The paper presents the characteristics of the flow through a S-shaped rectangular-round diffusing intake with a vortex control device. The diffuser was tested at 30° and 40° incidence. There is a separated flow region at bottom wall near throat of the duct. The vortex control device was set there, with which the line vortex was sucked out. The investigation shows that as suction increases the swirl can be depressed, even the bulk vertex disappears nearly if suction is large enough, and the total pressure coefficient η and total pressure distortion DC go down greatly. Hence, the method of vortex control is available for removing swirl, decreasing total pressure loss, and improving flow field in S-shaped intake.
