Abstract: Hybrid structures of Steel/Al-alloys dissimilar metals have wide applications in fields of aircraft, aerospace and vehicle body industries because of their lightweight and excellent structural properties, and spot welding is an important technology in manufacturing these structures. However, brittle intermetallic compounds are generated in the steel/Al-alloys welding process, imposing significant challenges on traditional resistance spot welding as a fusion welding method. In this paper, the research progress in steel/Al-alloys dissimilar metals spot welding is reviewed. The main technologies for steel/Al-alloys spot welding, such as resistance spot welding, resistance riveting welding, CMT spot welding, ultrasonic spot welding and friction bit welding, are systematically investigated and comparatively analyzed. Finally, the development tendency of steel/Al-alloys dissimilar metals spot welding is predicted.

Key words: steel/aluminum (Al) dissimilar metals, spot welding, resistance spot welding, resistance riveting welding, CMT spot welding, ultrasonic spot welding, friction plug-riveting, compound spot welding
