Abstract: An optimal control strategy deduced by means of three degree of freedom trajectory optimization techniques is used to achieve 180 degree heading changes of a fighter airplane. Three functional agility metrics such as combat cycle time, dynamic speed turn plots and relative energy state are analyzed. The effect of artificial control by pilot in evaluating functional agility metrics may be reduced to a great extent and significant improvements of agility metrics can be obtained by using an optimal maneuver.
