Abstract: The traction characteristics of Synthetic lubricants in rolling/sliding contacts are studied in detail in the present paper by using thermal partial elastohydrodynamic lubrication theory and the Ree-Eyring rheological model which accounts for the non-Newtonian behavior of the lubricant. The variety regularities of the traction coefficient of synthetic lubricants with the load, rolling speed and lubricant viscosity are obtained and a comparison between the calculated results presented in the paper and the experimental results of Gupta et al is also shown. In addition, a working formula, which fits the traction coefficient of synthetic lubricant versus slide-roll ratio curve, has also been devised.
