Abstract: This article studies the problem of direction finding and polarization estimation of coherent sources by means of uniform linear electromagnetic vector sensor array. A new polarization smoothing algorithm using a uniform linear array (ULAPSA), which can decorrelate the coherency of more sources compared with the PSA, is first proposed to preprocess the incident signals. Then two parameter estimation methods are presented with a developed ULAPSA. The first method estimtes the direction of arrival (DOA) by minimizing the cost function. The second method, which requires neither the eigendecomposition into signal/noise subspaces nor 2D iterative searching, applies the propagator method to estimate the direction cosines. The method is suitable for dipole triad, loop triad or dipole-triad-plus-loop-triad and can estimate both DOA and polarization. Finally, the performances of the proposed methods are evaluated through numerical examples, and their validity is proven.
