Abstract: The development of the giant magnetostrictive materials magnetostrictive alloy was introduced. The methods of the fabrication for the materials were compared. Tb 0.3 Dy 0.7 Fe 1.95 was prepared by vacuum induction melting and zone melting unidirectional solidification methods. The solidified morphologies, microstructure and the preferred orientations were measured by the optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. The results indicate that the alloy possesses two phases including MgCu 2 type(Tb,Dy)Fe 2 and rare earth phase. The solidified morphologies were cell and dendrite and their preferred orientations were 〈110〉 and 〈112〉, respectively. The application of the materials in aeronautic and astronautic industries was analyzed.
