Abstract: A new view on relationship between interference fit joint and stress-corrosion cracking has been reached as a consequence of investigation on stress distribution in construction joints and analysis of effects of interference fit on stress-corrosion cracking and the results from stress-corrosion tests of interference fit joints under external loads are presented. The tests of stress-corrosion in interference fit joints were completed abroad without external loads. The stress-corrosion occurred when the prestress of the interference fit exceeded the stress-corrosion threshold stress of a construction material. Furthermore, the greater the amount of the interference fit, the more serious the stress corrosion was.The results of our experimental investigation demonstrate that the duration of the stress-corrosion cracking in the interference fit joint is longer than that of an ordinary one under external loads, because the interference fit overcomes the serious stress concentration. Moreover, the duration of the stress-corrosion cracking increases with enhancement of the relative interference.
