Abstract: analysis model for adhesively bonding a strip to a cracked plate is first presented. Then, based on this model,a singular integral equations method is developed,in which Green's functions for a pair of edge dislocations and for a concentrated body force are used for the formulation of the problem. Using this method, the stress intensity factors not only at the crack tips, but also at the bonding limit points or debonding fronts and at the ends of the strip, are ob- tained. Finally, some numerical results are given to show the effects of the shear modulus ratio of the strip to the plate,of the size of the strip and of the manner of bonding,on the efficiency of re- tarding the crack growth.

Key words: crack arrest, plates (structural members), crack closure, stress intensity factors
