Abstract: Bolt joint and riveting joint are the main connection methods of the aircraft structure. Because of the serious structural stress concentration at hole edge, hole structures are prone to fatigue fracture. Therefore, improving the fatigue strength of connection hole is a critical technical problem that the aviation industry is generally concerned about. Hole cold expansion is the most widely used technique for the hole anti-fatigue manufacturing. In present paper, the hole cold expansion technologies, the strengthening mechanism, the factors influencing cold expansion process, the effect of service conditions on cold expansion anti-fatigue gain, and the effect of re-cold expansion on pre-fatigued hole are summarized, at last, based on the studying status of cold expansion and the actual needing in aviation industry, some prospects and recommendations of cold expansion needed to be further studied in the future are proposed.
