Abstract

The development of commercial aircraft is a complex task. Different objective functions and constraints lead to different designs. It is necessary to obtain a win-win solution between the technical performance and commercial benefits of the aircraft while meeting the safety requirements. Using a Value-Driven Design (VDD) methodology, this study achieves a close coupling between the system engineering method and the multidisciplinary optimization design. Through a flexible and customized aircraft design program, a design optimization framework based on the Surplus Value (SV) model is developed. This framework is used to carry out an optimization design of maximizing the surplus value of the aircraft for a typical flight mission. The results are compared with those obtained by optimizing the minimum Direct Operating Cost (DOC). The results show that design with minimum direct operating cost produces less competitive surplus value. The surplus value model provided better coordination among aircraft operating economics and industrial economics and can be used to obtain better and more balanced aircraft design. Such a methodology is crucial for emerging aircraft manufacturers.
