Abstract: The active morphing flapping wing can mimic the complex movement of a flying bird’s wings. In order to understand the aerodynamics of the active morphing wing ornithopter, the bird’s bone structure, the laws of motion of wing and tail were studied, an active morphing wing ornithopter was designed and built base on robotics. The laws of motion of the ornithopter were presented, a control system was designed and built. Wind tunnel tests of the ornithopter were performed in a low-speed wind tunnel. The lift, thrust characteristics and aerodynamic mechanism were studied, also the influence of wind velocity, flapping frequency, amplitude, stretch phase was investigated. The conventional flapping wing was tested as contrast. The test result shows that the active morphing wing can increase the lift and enhance ability to adapt to flight status.
